JNU Got Enlightened ?

The administration of Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) has released a draft manual that was a ticking time bomb for almost two decades. The manual has a provision of fee hike, dress code and curfew timings.

Ofcourse the administration is saying why not; but the student community, instead of asking why now and why so much, they are demanding freedom. Appalling indeed !

Let me put it straight for you:

The manual released by the administration of JNU has listed certain increase from the previous fee amount. But there is no change on account of dress code or curfew timings. It is only a carry forward of the old text. But the same is being highlighted by the anti-change elements to create an environment of agitation, more aimed towards their refute of fee hike.

To also create a contrary view, just look at the above table which shows the quantum of increase and a percentile analysis of the new proposal. Keeping things in perspective, it does look excruciating. Especially for those lower income group students who have made their way to a bigger city only for the financial benefits being matched by the institute. The propaganda looks a bit reversed at this moment, doesn't it !

An approximately 500% increase is enough for any family to recall their child into their homely turf; and also for a student to have no choice but spend a meagre amount on inter-state transport back to their village. Unless they take to their most sought after play time - dharna, gherao and violence. Its hard to say whose fault, but for these students it becomes an obvious choice. In a place where no one hears you in peace, violence seems to be the only way around.

But that is not the solution. It can be equally matched in defence and aggression by the government authorities. And the newspaper headline will be - (innocent) students attacked by the (insensitive) police. And it will only go worse.

No doubt the increase is far more in proportion to existing fees, but is on terms with the current commercial scenario. There can be a rather gradual increase instead of a sudden spike in fees. Also, there could be an equal increase in the amount of scholarship being granted as well, to help nullify the effect. But will there be ?

Now, it is upto the student community to understand and have a balance between their interests and civilian behaviour. But the question is, is the student community only driven by their financial and career interest or could there be political ambitions behind the pomp and show ?
